Our History

Greene Funeral Home Inc. is a full service funeral establishment serving the local community of Alexandria, Virginia as well as the states of Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. The firm was started in May,1954 at its current location.

The original business was a sole proprietorship with Nelson E. Greene Sr. as the owner. His loving wife, Gloria, was not only the matriarch of the family, but in a loving and supportive manner, the financial backer of the funeral home. For a number of years her salary as s school teacher not only supported the family, but supported the funeral home, until like any business, it finally began to show a profit. Through all the years she never let us forget it, in a loving manner, and we’ll always be thankful for that.

In the mid 1970’s it was decided to incorporate the business. Nelson E. Greene, Sr. became the president, Nelson E. Greene Jr. became vice-president, Gloria K. Greene became Secretary-Treasurer, Terry F. Greene, a member of the Board of Directors. These positions were maintained until the death of Nelson, Sr. and Gloria in 2014. In 2019, Nelson Jr. and Donita became the owners of Greene Funeral Home Inc.

The original building and grand house were built in 1793 as a wooden frame house that retained some of the colonial era furnishings. The wooden framed building was brick covered in 1958. In 1974, it became necessary to expend the facilities. Several homes adjacent to the original were demolished and the present day building erected. The funeral home now offers a chapel that seats up to 150 persons. The garage that originally housed all the company vehicles has been changed to hold at least six beloved remains, awaiting final disposition. We also offer off street parking for 40+ cars for the convenience of our clients.
